AAC Every Day: Making Communication Normal

October 07, 2026•1 min read

Make AAC part of every moment — from meals to play, school to outings, and watch your child’s confidence soar!

Sara John and Rebecca Edwards

AAC is most effective when it’s part of everyday life, not limited to therapy sessions. Meal times, playtime, outings, and school are all opportunities to use AAC. The more naturally it fits into your child’s daily routine, the more confident they become in communicating their thoughts, needs, and feelings.

Consistency is key. The more your child sees AAC being used across different environments and by various people, the more it becomes a natural way to communicate. Modelling is just as important — showing your child how to use AAC during daily routines helps them understand its purpose and builds their independence.

AAC isn’t a separate “task” or something only done during therapy. It works best when it’s woven into the things your family already does every day — sharing a snack, reading a story, playing a game, or chatting during a walk. These everyday moments become meaningful opportunities for learning and connecting.
