Highlighting the importance of accessible communication, inclusive environments and presuming competence.

Sara John and Rebecca Edwards

Each year on World Down Syndrome Day, we celebrate the lives, strengths, and achievements of individuals with Down syndrome.

At Serennu Therapies, we are passionate about supporting children with Down syndrome and their families. Every child has their own unique communication profile, and our aim is always to provide support that is meaningful, functional and evidence-based.

Guidance from organisations such as the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists and Down Syndrome UK highlights that children with Down syndrome may experience differences in communication development.

These may include differences in:

  • speech sound development

  • expressive language skills

  • hearing and auditory processing

  • oral motor coordination

  • speech intelligibility

While these differences can present challenges, children with Down syndrome also have many strengths, particularly in social communication and connection with others.

Early support plays a key role in helping children develop communication skills that support learning, relationships and independence.

Evidence-based speech and language therapy may include strategies such as:

  • early language stimulation through play and interaction

  • visual supports and signing

  • AAC - Augmentative and Alternative Communication

  • Supporting auditory memory skills

  • developing vocabulary and sentence structure

  • supporting speech clarity over time

Most importantly, a neuro-affirming approach recognises each child as an individual. Communication support should always reflect their interests, strengths, and goals.

World Down Syndrome Day is a reminder to celebrate difference, advocate for inclusion, and continue learning how we can best support communication for every child.
