Cerebral Palsy Awareness Month: Understanding Communication Differences

March 25, 20261 min read

March is Cerebral Palsy Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness and celebrate the strength, individuality, and achievements of people living with cerebral palsy.

Cerebral palsy (CP) is a group of neurological conditions that affect movement, coordination and posture. It occurs due to differences in how the brain develops or functions early in life.

While CP primarily affects movement, communication can also be impacted for some individuals.

Communication differences may include:

  • reduced breath support for speech

  • difficulties coordinating the muscles used for speech

  • differences in speech clarity (dysarthria)

  • challenges with motor planning for speech

  • physical difficulties accessing speech or communication tools

Many individuals with cerebral palsy use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), such as communication boards, symbol systems, or speech-generating devices. These tools can support individuals to express themselves, share ideas, and participate fully in their communities.

Speech and language therapists work alongside families, schools, and other professionals to ensure individuals with CP have access to the communication supports they need.

Cerebral Palsy Awareness Month reminds us to celebrate the voices, achievements, and individuality of people with CP, while continuing to advocate for accessible communication for everyone.
