What a Speech and Language Therapist Actually Does

Your Child Deserves Expert Support — Here’s Why

Sara John and Rebecca Edwards

When you're worried about your child's communication, advice comes from everywhere — family, friends, other parents, social media. Much of it is well-meant, and some of it is genuinely useful.

What a speech and language therapist adds is assessment. We look at how your child is communicating now, across every mode they use, and work out what is helping and what is getting in the way. Speech and language therapists are regulated by the Health and Care Professions Council, which means we are accountable for our practice, work within a defined scope, and keep our knowledge current.

We also work as part of a team. Health visitors, teachers, teaching assistants, occupational therapists and NHS colleagues all see things we don't, and children do best when everyone supporting them is working from the same understanding. Our job isn't to replace that — it's to bring specialist assessment to it.

Whether your child is using speech, AAC, or a combination of both, the aim is the same: to understand how they communicate and to build from there.
