They’ll Grow Out of It… Or Will They?

Why waiting for speech sounds to “fix themselves” can sometimes

do more harm than good

Sara John and Rebecca Edwards

It’s common for parents to be told not to worry — that their child’s unclear speech is just a normal part of development and they’ll “grow out of it.” And while this is true for some children, it’s not true for all. There are early signs in young babies — such as limited cooing, a limited range of sounds when babbling, or difficulty imitating sounds — that may indicate a higher risk of future speech sound difficulties.

Some speech sound difficulties are developmental — they follow a predictable pattern and improve naturally as children mature. But others are not. These may be linked to motor planning challenges (like Childhood Apraxia of Speech) or persistent speech difficulties that need structured, evidence-based support.

When a child’s speech is only understood by close family and friends, it can impact far more than just their ability to talk. It can impact confidence, social interaction, and literacy later on. The earlier we identify what’s going on, the sooner we can help children communicate clearly and confidently.

If your child’s speech isn’t improving or you’re being told to “wait and see,”

- trust your instincts.
