Understanding AAC and How It Helps Children Communicate

October is AAC Awareness Month — a time to celebrate the many ways children can communicate and to raise understanding about Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC). AAC isn’t just about technology or devices; it’s any tool or strategy that supports a child in expressing themselves for many reasons. This can include sign systems, picture boards, gesture-based systems, speech-generating devices, or communication apps.

AAC is used for children for many reasons. By providing children with AAC, we give them a voice to share their thoughts, make choices, and connect with the people around them. It’s about recognising that every child has something important to say — even if their words don’t come out the way we expect.

Using AAC doesn’t replace speech; it supports it. Children often develop language skills faster when they have reliable ways to communicate. Families and educators can model language through AAC, making communication consistent across home, school, and social settings. Every gesture, symbol, or device interaction is an opportunity to strengthen understanding, independence, and confidence.

This AAC Awareness Month, let’s celebrate all forms of communication and commit to ensuring every child can be heard. At Serennu Therapies, we support families and schools in finding the right AAC tools, coaching on how to use them effectively, and building an environment where children’s voices are valued.
