What is AAC?

Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) refers to the methods and tools used to support or augment speech. AAC can be as simple as picture cards or gesture systems, or as advanced as speech-generating devices and apps.

For many children, AAC provides the key to making their thoughts heard, their choices known, and their emotions understood. Importantly, AAC does not stop or slow down speech development. A systematic review by Millar, Light and Schlosser (2006) found no evidence that AAC inhibits speech, and evidence that it often supports spoken language. Later work by Romski and Sevcik reached the same conclusion. This is one of the best-evidenced findings in our field, and it matters, because the fear that AAC will "stop them talking" keeps too many children waiting.
