Understand your child's language development and how we can help

Every child develops language in their own way.

What is Delayed Echolalia?

Delayed echolalia is when a child repeats words, phrases, or full sentences they’ve heard before, sometimes minutes, hours, or even days later. This language may come from people around them, or from media such as TV shows, films, or YouTube videos.

This is often a part of gestalt language processing (GLP). Children who are gestalt language processors use memorised chunks of language, or “gestalts,” as the building blocks for developing more complex and flexible speech over time. It’s their way of making sense of language, connecting with others, and expressing wants, needs, and ideas.

Many autistic individuals develop language this way, though some non-autistic children also process language through gestalts. Some children move naturally move from copied phrases to self-generated speech, while others may need support to progress to the next stages of language development.

Are You Feeling Concerned?

If your child mainly uses repeated phrases and you’re worried about their progress with speech, you’re not alone.

This can feel frustrating or confusing for parents, but delayed echolalia is a recognised language development pathway. With the right support, children can build on these scripts and learn to communicate more flexibly.

If you don't know if your child is learning language this way, because they're non-speaking, only make sounds / noises or sing songs, then check out our booklets or our on demand training to understand what to look out for in non-speaking or minimally speaking children!

Parent coaching

We equip you with strategies to respond to echolalia, model language naturally, and help your child move towards more flexible, self-generated speech.
