Advocating for ND-Affirming Accommodations at School

April 08, 20261 min read

A child who is supported in ways that honour their neurotype is more likely to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

Simple, effective accommodations might include:
🌱 Reduced sensory load (ear defenders, quiet spaces, sensory tools)
🌱 Flexible seating
🌱 Visual supports
🌱 Extra processing time
🌱 Respecting communication differences (
AAC, gestures, written, etc.)
🌱 Low-demand days when needed

How to advocate confidently:
✅ Keep communication open with ALNCo + teachers
✅ Reference your child’s strengths + needs, not deficits
✅ Bring supporting documentation (SLT reports, IDP targets)
✅ Ask what adaptations can be trialled
✅ Collaborate to create realistic adjustments

Key Takeaway: You know your child best—your voice matters. Neurodiversity-affirming accommodations allow them to succeed on their terms.
